Not conquered this as yet, something I’ve struggled with since 2011. And truth be told, if anything, I’ve gotten progressively worse over the years; some may say.
Do I like it? I don’t like not having a balance, as it tells me that I’m clearly falling short, it means important aspects of my life are being neglected and it’s a constant reminder that I need to do better.
However, what I love is the thrill of setting up a new venture from ground 0, formulating strategies and execution plans, problem solving, the extreme pressure and then seeing it all come together and simply work (at which stage, I’d have already moved onto the next).
This way of life is not for everyone. It shouldn’t be a forced approach either, if it is, you’ll cause yourself some serious health issues. If it’s part of your DNA, then you’ll relate and agree when I say, it keeps you as fit as a fiddle, youthful as Gen Alpha, and somehow, full of energy, with an increasingly active mind.
For myself I can accept the workaholic lifestyle; I can justify it to those around me by stating it comes with the role and responsibilities, even though deep down I realise if I wanted I could slow down a tad, or at the very least, give myself the weekend off from time to time – but when work is rooted in supporting the betterment of others, the dopamine is what keeps you going.
For the team however, I can’t justify the imbalance. Balance is imperative, although difficult to achieve in a fast paced marketing and design agency, and trust me there do come times where work simply rules over rest. I believe 2024 was a good year for ensuring not only were team members signing off at 4pm, but we pushed the boat a little to test the waters ahead of 2025 to see if we can strike it better, with half-day Fridays.
The bottom line is, our team works hard, the work ethic is second to none, the quality of the output is always better than the previous and peer to peer support is sincere, considerate and kind – so do I want to make their work life even better; 100% yes. Do I see it as my duty to do so, 100% yes. Does the team motivate me to work harder, 100% yes.
And so, we set out to explore and implement practical steps to help ease pressures and create a balance, during working hours as well as minimising risk of burnout and working excessive overtime;
All of this stems from one simple belief; people do their best work when they’re supported to live well, which in return means, our clients receive the best versions of us and deliverables, all whilst we maintain a beautiful company culture.
As a leader, I’ve realised balance doesn’t come from slowing the pace of ambition, but from building systems that let people thrive while chasing it. 2026 will be another test of how we can evolve together, proving that creativity, kindness, and balance aren’t trade-offs, but the foundation for long-term success.
